Mid Century East German 3/4 Double Bass Carved

Mid Century East German 3/4 Double Bass – Carved Spruce Top – Recent Professional/Luthier Structural Work - £2995 - exceptional value compared to shop price of £5,000+.

A videos of Andy Champion playing the double are available upon request.

A really handsome East German double bass dating from the mid-20th century, featuring a carved spruce table, attractive flamed back and ribs, ebony fingerboard, brass machine heads and traditional violin-corner construction.

This bass has recently undergone professional structural work to address open seams and is now structurally stable and ready for use.

The instrument produces a really lovely warm, mature tone and would suit orchestral, jazz, folk or advancing student use.

It has the look and character associated with the better East German workshop instruments and presents exceptionally well and which are especially hard to find at a price such as this.

Recent Professional Work

The bass was inspected by a professional luthier and has recently benefited from:

* Opening and re-gluing of the back at the neck block to achieve correct projection.

* Re-gluing of previously open body seams.

* Structural inspection of the instrument.

* Bridge and soundpost set up

All seams are now closed and secure.

Historic Repairs

In the interests of complete transparency:

The bass has a historic centre-back joint repair which is visible externally under certain lighting conditions. Internally this repair has been reinforced with traditional studs (cleats) and has been assessed as stable - see internal photos.

The centre seam is straight and secure with no known active movement.

As is common with older double basses, evidence of historic repair work remains visible on close inspection but does not affect the structural integrity of the instrument.

Photographs of the interior and repair work are available for serious buyers.

String length 108cm (nut to bridge).

Condition

Good overall vintage condition.

The bass shows expected cosmetic wear, edge marks and varnish blemishes consistent with age and use.

There are no known open seams following the recent work.

The instrument presents extremely well and retains considerable visual appeal.

Included

* Adjustable bridge
* New Tailpiece
* Machine heads
* Endpin

Ready to string to the buyer’s preferred specification if so desired.

If anyone wishes to see videos of the double bass being played I can message this over by WhatsApp.

Photos including internal photographs showing the historic studded centre-joint repair and recent seam work are show in the photos can be supplied on request.

A genuinely attractive and increasingly hard-to-find East German bass that has already had the important structural work carried out.
